Composing

Please visit the recordings page to hear samples of Joshua Feltman’s original works.

Joshua Feltman’s recent commissions include The Ties that Bind for the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra performed at Symphony Space in 2006, his second New York area orchestral performance.  ASCAP awarded Mr. Feltman a fellowship to the Aspen Film Scoring as well as the Leonard Bernstein fellowship for Tanglewood in 2004.  His Marimba Sonata is published by Mostly Marimba and his wind ensemble work Kubla Khan was recorded by conductor William Drury for Albany Records.

Reviews of Mr. Feltman’s work have been very positive. His music to accompany a collaborative project there with experimental filmmakers was described as “elegant crossover style” by the Boston Globe.  Acclaimed as a work of “real emotional power” by San Francisco Classical Review, Feltman’s orchestral work Commute was a commission from the Oakland East-Bay Symphony.

Mr. Feltman is currently working on both an orchestral work and a piano concerto, the latter of which he intends to perform himself with his own ensemble.  He has led this group (CME) since 2005 in over 10 performances of important contemporary repertoire, many premieres among them.

At the Tanglewood Music Center, Mr. Feltman studied with composers Michael Gandolfi, Steve Mackey and Augusta Read Thomas and participated in Master Classes with Bright Sheng, Bernard Rands and Osvaldo Golijov. A graduate of SUNY Stony Brook (composition studies with Peter Winkler, Sheila Silver and Dan Weymouth), he received his undergraduate degree from the New England Conservatory (composition studies with Lee Hyla), from which he received the George Chadwick medal for outstanding undergraduate work. His chamber orchestra work An Old American Dream was selected as the only student work performed on the 1996 NEC festival of 20th century American music and also received an ASCAP YoungComposers award.
